✄--- PROFILE/BACKGROUND ---
✄--- a cat is a cat by any other name
NOTE: He's taken before Alice and Break get drawn into the dimension of Alice's memories, and based entirely on what information there is in the manga.
✄--- PROFILE
The Cheshire Cat is a Chain who was once Alice's pet cat (kitten, really). Jack Vessalius noted that the cat seemed to be as peculiar as its mistress: at times Cheshire seemed to hate Alice, particularly when her personality changed.
Out of petty revenge-- or perhaps, simply, childish spite-- the boy who will eventually grow up to be Vincent Nightray takes a pair of scissors to the kitten. Whether he receives any repercussions for what he does to Alice's beloved pet is unknown. Either way, there is nothing to change the fact of the kitten sprawled on the floor, broken like another of Vincent's decapitated toys.
An unknown number of years later (roughly 10 years after the Tragedy of Sablier, by 'real time' standards), a now human Cheshire is seen with a girl whose appearance resembles Alice: the Intention of the Abyss. Curiously enough, he seems affectionate towards her. Even she, however, has not been able to heal his eyes, and the empty sockets have been covered with a bandage.
When the knight Kevin Regnard is dragged to the Abyss because of the termination of his illegal contract, he meets the Intention of the Abyss, as well as Cheshire. Taken by a sudden caprice, the Intention declares that she will rip out Kevin's eyes to give to her cat. While she succeeds in taking the left eye, they're abruptly interrupted by unwelcome guests: a young Vincent and Gilbert Nightray, fresh from the Tragedy of Sablier.Because apparently, the Abyss doesn't care about silly things like actual internal chronological order, unless it turns out the Sablier shit turns out to be something else.
Vincent's appearance distresses Alice, enough to trigger a personality change-- the sadist disappears, replaced by a helpless, heartbroken, and utterly mad girl. Unable to do anything to help, Cheshire watches Alice break down, until Kevin calls out her name.
A deal is made. The clock rewinds.
Kevin Ragnard gets his past rewritten, and learns that it is far worse than the nightmare he wanted to change... but that's a story for another time.
✄--- HEADCANON
♥ There is only one person he will call by name, and that is Alice. Every else gets rather childish nicknames.
♥ During Break's flashback to meeting the Intention of the Abyss, Cheshire is already wearing the bell around his neck. It is notable that neither the Intention of the Abyss nor her 'alternate' personality seem to recall anything about the Tragedy of Sablier, which may imply that these memories are already sealed inside the bell.
♥ Specific rundown of headcanon chronology:
-> When Cheshire dies, the Intention of the Abyss turns him into a Chain to be her manservant. Nothing says sisterly love like stealing each other's belongings.
-> Tragedy of Sablier happens. Alice's "death" somehow transports her into the Abyss, so that now she alternates personalities with the Intention in the Abyss.
-> Both Alices are flipping the fuck out over the Tragedy of Sablier, since Jack was important to both of them. The decision is made (unconsciously, really) to seal their collective memories of the incident into Cheshire's bell.
-> Cheshire is actually pretty imokwiththis.jpg about the whole thing; he doesn't get much of a choice about serving the Abyss because she made him, but once in a while his real mistress comes out and he's happier.
-> In granting Kevin's wish, the Intention (or at least the part of her that was human!Alice) leaves the Abyss. Cheshire is left with nothing but his duty to protect Alice's memories.
♥ Since he can freely move between the dimension formed by Alice's memories and the 'real' world, Cheshire can take the form of an ordinary cat.Which totally doesn't help his body disassociation, nope. He usually stays in his Chain form because it is the body that makes him feel closer to Alice.
☠ He was a kitten when he died, and is unusual in that he's an animal turned into a Chain. (Many other Chains, it seems, are humans warped by the Abyss.) As such, he has the barest grasp on human customs; it doesn't help that he was living with a little girl who had no problem casually licking someone's bloody eyeball.
☠ He's a rather flaky individual about things that aren't Alice. Good luck getting a name to stick.
☠ Has a phobia of scissors, despite his own claws occasionally threatening to gouge out his own eyes.
✄--- CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS
♥ He'll be able to recognize Alice (♥), the Intention of the Abyss (♥), Jack Vessalius (???), Xerxes Break(???), Vincent Nightray(☠ ☠ ☠) & Glen Baskerville(☠). He doesn't seem to demonstrate recognition of Gilbert Nightray (presumably because he wasn't the little shit who stabbed his eyes out).
☠ He'll avoid the fuck out of you if you're Vincent, unless you're threatening his Alice. Again.
♥ If you are a Chain, he'll probably recognize you, if only by your face. He's also recognizable to any Chain that has dealt with the Intention of the Abyss-- once he became a Chain, he was constantly at her side.
♥ He doesn't need a Contractor, but the possibility of contracting him still exists.
NOTE: He's taken before Alice and Break get drawn into the dimension of Alice's memories, and based entirely on what information there is in the manga.
